Check the hypertension to what specialist doctor?

Before coming to a specialist, you should check with a general practitioner first, whether that is in the clinic, health center, or your nearest health service.

Usually, a general practitioner will do a basic physical examination. During the examination, the doctor will ask what complaints and signs you have felt so far.

If necessary, the doctor will also ask about how your lifestyle, diet, and daily activities. You can also tell the history of your illness and your family members.

After that, usually the doctor or nurse will check your blood pressure. From this examination the doctor can usually determine whether you really suffer from hypertension, what type of hypertension you are suffering from, and check the hypertension to what specialist doctor.

Based on the Indonesian Doctors Competency Standards, the following are competencies that can be handled by general practitioners based on the type of hypertension that patients experience:

Essential hypertension

This type of hypertension occurs not because of certain diseases in your body. Usually, essential hypertension can be diagnosed and treated directly by a general practitioner.

So if you are diagnosed with this type of hypertension, you don't need to see a specialist.

Secondary hypertension

Secondary hypertension is hypertension that occurs due to other medical conditions, for example due to kidney, heart and endocrine system.

If this is the case, general practitioners can only provide preliminary diagnosis and therapy. Next, you will be referred to a specialist according to the cause of your hypertension condition.

For example, hypertension is caused by a kidney condition so you will be referred to a specialist in internal medicine with kidney and hypertension subspecialists.

Pulmonary hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension results from problems with the vessels in the lungs and the right part of your heart. In this case, the general practitioner can only provide an overview of the disease to the patient. Then, you will be referred to a cardiologist.

Please note that you usually cannot see a specialist doctor if you do not consult a general practitioner first. However, if you feel confident about seeing a specialist directly, you can discuss it first with a general practitioner.

After knowing what hypertension check with a specialist doctor, you should immediately arrange a schedule to see a doctor.
